Waikiki to Dole Plantation! What to know about getting there (shuttle, circle island tour, bus, parking) Oahu Hawaii travel tips

You can do the Dole Plantation as a trip from Waikiki if you want to do something fun, easy-going, and very Hawaii… especially if you like pineapples!

You can go on your own by bus or by renting a car, or there are shuttles and circle island tours that go there.

The highlight of my time at Dole Plantation was eating the Dole Whip! 😅

When in Hawaii! I even made sure to get extra pineapple toppings on it!

Also I liked seeing the cute baby pineapples!

As for whether it will be worth it for YOU, well… that depends… 🤪

It really depends on what you’re looking for out of your visit! It is a complete and total tourist attraction. But it’s also something that’s so-Hawaii!

Aside from eating the pineapple ice cream in the most pineapple-themed place there is in Hawaii, you can have a low key time doing more pineapple things.

 

👆 I got the Dole Whip with pineapple toppings. The container has changed since the time I went. It now says “Hawaii plantation” on it! You can actually get the Dole Whip at other places on Oahu, but a Dole Whip at the Dole Plantation just seems like the right way to do it. 😆

 

 

👆 I spotted these cute little baby pineapples while walking around the free garden area at Dole Plantation! There’s also a paid garden tour if you want to see even more tropical plants up close.

You can make Dole Plantation a quick stop if you just want to get some Dole Whip. A 30 minute stop can work for this. You can also spend several hours here if you do other activities. Some are paid, some are free activities.

I ended up spending around 2.5 hours at the Dole Plantation, and it was very easy-going. Mostly I just got the Dole Whip, saw the free pineapple cutting demonstration, walked around the small free pineapple garden to see cute baby pineapples (there’s also a paid garden you can walk through), and took the little train ride through the pineapple fields.

The extra paid activities at the Dole Plantation are the train ride (through pineapple fields), garden maze (once called the world’s largest maze), and the plantation garden tour. See more about each of these pineapple activities. You’ll need to pay for these things, but there’s no overall entrance fee otherwise.

And then of course buying your pineapple ice cream! See the menu.

So you really don’t need a full-day commitment for the Dole Plantation, but you might find yourself hanging around longer than you think you will… or at least I did! When I just described what I did, I was thinking I don’t know how it took 2 hours. 😅 It doesn’t seem like that much!

The cheapest way to get to the Dole Plantation from Waikiki is by bus, but it does take some time and patience. You can also go by shuttle or book a circle island tour that includes a stop at the Dole Plantation. You can rent a car and go too. There’s a big parking lot.

Dole Plantation is in the town of Wahiawa in Central Oahu. It’s about 25 to 30 miles from Waikiki, and by car, it might take around 45 minutes depending on traffic. If you’re taking the bus, it will take closer to 2 hours, but it is possible.

How to get to Dole Plantation

Now, here is a little more about getting to Dole Plantation from Waikiki, by car, shuttle, tour, or bus.

 

Driving (parking)

If you already know that you want to rent a car, then you can drive to Dole Plantation. This is truly the easiest way to see the Dole Plantation so that you have the flexibility to leave when you want to explore more of the island.

There is a parking lot for at the Dole Plantation, and it’s free.

The drive to Dole Plantation might take 45 minutes from Waikiki. It’s possible it may take longer depending on traffic. (map)

And longer also if you make stops! It can be reasonable to go to Pearl Harbor on your way to Dole Plantation. (map)

Pearl Harbor is closer to Waikiki and something you could also easily do without a car. You can go by bus, and there are also Pearl Harbor tours.

The big destination that Dole Plantation is often paired with is a drive to the North Shore!

And your possibilities of things to do on the North Shore are endless. Among the top things are Waimea Valley (Waimea Falls, botanical garden, Toa Luau) and Laniakea Beach (aka turtle beach – reviews).

 

To rent a car to go to Dole Plantation and more, search for the cheapest car rentals. The best prices will generally be from Honolulu Airport.

Shuttle

If you want to go to Dole Plantation without renting a car or don’t want to spend the long time by going by bus… and you want to do more than just eat Dole Whip (aka you want to spend more time there!), then the shuttle is the next best option.

A shuttle will usually give you around 2 hours at Dole Plantation so you can explore more. As a “shuttle” it is basically just round-trip transportation from Waikiki. So it will not include any of the paid activities.

There is a shuttle from Waikiki that goes to both Dole Plantation and the town of Haleiwa on the North Shore. You’ll get 2 hours at the Dole Plantation and 2 hours in Haleiwa.

Circle island tours with Dole Plantation

If you don’t mind the Dole Plantation just being about the Dole Whip or looking at pineapple gifts at the gift shop (aka you don’t mind it being a quick stop!), then you should definitely consider a circle island tour to go there.

This way, you’ll get to do the classic Hawaii activity that is the Dole Plantation, and you will get to see a bunch of other very-Hawaii things!

Not all circle island tours make a stop at the Dole Plantation, but many do. If a tour does make the stop, it’s usually a 30 minute stop. Enough time to get your pineapple ice cream!

Here are 2 tours you should consider if you’re looking to go to Dole Plantation as a quick stop that’s part of a circle island tour. These have Waikiki pick-up and drop-off.

 

Hidden gems of Oahu tour: Check availability

You’ll get 30 minutes at both the Dole Plantation and Byodo-in Temple, plus a long list of other stops and scenic viewpoints. Many of them are quick photo opportunities or pass-by locations. So you will get to see a lot of Oahu.

Byodo-in Temple and Waimea botanical garden tour: Check availability

If you want a slower paced tour that goes to the Dole Plantation, as well as 2 very scenic Oahu places (and more), you need to consider this tour.

You’ll get the most time at Waimea Valley (2 hours) where you can spend time walking the botanical garden, Hawaii cultural sites, and seeing waterfalls. It’s a paved trail of 3/4 mile to the waterfalls, and along the way you can take your time walking through the garden and cultural sites.

You’ll also get 30 minutes at Dole Plantation, as well as 25 minutes at Byodo-in Temple.

There are also some quick stops to see a few more very-Hawaii type things like Halona Blowhole and Macadamia Nut Farm outlet.

Bus

I went to the Dole Plantation by bus.

Going by bus from Waikiki means that it will take time and patience!

But the nearest bus stop is pretty much right at the Dole Plantation, so it’s a pretty convenient bus stop.

 

Overall, expect the time in transit from Waikiki to Dole Plantation to take just under 2 hours one way.

A bus transfer will be necessary no matter what. Google maps makes it easy to navigate by bus to Dole Plantation! Just look for the public transit icon, pick a route you like, and do what it says!

If you look at bus directions and see there are 2 transfers required or that it takes closer to 3 hours, adjust your start time. You can get there with just one transfer in less than 2 hours.

Just to get you started, for example, you can type in your hotel in Waikiki as your starting point, and Dole Plantation as your destination. See the map.

When you’re actually in Waikiki, you’ll just use your current location as the starting point. It will tell you where your nearest bus stop is. You can play around with the routes. Doing this on the google maps app on your phone gives you more details. You can click on “scheduled” to see more upcoming departures, and you can click on “stops” when you’re actually on the bus to see exactly how many stops you have left (and follow along on the map with GPS once you’re on the bus). It will tell you where your nearest bus stop is.

👆 You’ll see different options, so you can expand each route to see which one is best.

 

👆 You can expand out any bus route for details. This is bus #2 when coming from Waikiki. The closest bus stop to Dole Plantation is pretty much right there!

 

👆 It will also tell you about future bus timings! You can expand the “scheduled” section to see the different bus timings of any particular route. Do this for your way back and screenshot it!

 

It will be worth getting a HOLO card for the bus to Dole Plantation. You can get the card with a “day pass” at any ABC Store in Waikiki. This acts as a public transportation cash card, and you can load it up online if you want to take the bus on another day too. You can also order your card online if you still have time.

Otherwise, you’ll need cash in exact change for every bus ride you take. See current bus fare.

Since you have to transfer at least once to go from Waikiki to the Dole Plantation, if you don’t have a HOLO card, it means you will be paying individually for each bus ride at least 4 times. (Counting up the bus rides to get there and back.) There is no such thing as a transfer ticket if you pay in cash. With a HOLO card, you will be capped at the cost of a “day pass” and never pay more than that in one day for bus fares.

You can go to Dole Plantation on your own by bus (map). It will take time, and it does require a bus transfer. The bus stop is pretty much right in front of the Dole Plantation.

It’s maybe a 45 minute drive by car, maybe longer with traffic (map). See cost of car rentals at expedia.

You can do a jam-packed circle island tour that goes to Dole Plantation for 30 minutes, along with a lot of other famous and not-so-famous Oahu places. Read the reviews from people who have taken the tour.
