ALOHA!
Staying at a hotel in the Fort DeRussy Beach area will put you at the slightly quieter end of Waikiki. That said, Waikiki is not that big, so it’s still possible to be within walking distance of a lot of things. If you want beach access without staying directly in the busiest part of Waikiki, consider staying around the area of Fort DeRussy Beach.
Below I have a map of hotels around Fort DeRussy Beach, both beachfront hotels, and hotels that are a little further “back” but with easy access to the beach.
First, I want to explain what’s on the map, which would be the area surrounding Fort DeRussy Beach, to give you an understanding of where the hotels are located in relation to the beach and other key areas of Waikiki.

So, here’s what’s on the map!

Beachfront hotels closest to Fort DeRussy Beach
Fort DeRussy Beach itself stretches from the edge of the beach out in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort on one end to the Outrigger Reef Resort on the other end. The Hilton beach is called the Duke Kahanamoku Beach, and that’s right next to Fort DeRussy Beach.
The paved Fort DeRussy boardwalk connects from one end to the other with a 5-10 minute walk.
All of the beach is not equal, though!
The Hilton side has the widest area of sand (aka the best side of the beach), and there is comparatively less sand on the Outrigger Reef side. There is a beach umbrella rental stand, and it is still possible to set up on this narrower side. It just isn’t as spacious. Along with the Outrigger Reef at this end, there are also condo rentals at Waikiki Shore by Outrigger.
The one and only beachfront hotel on the most spacious area of Fort DeRussy Beach is the military-only Hale Koa Hotel.

π The Hilton end of Fort DeRussy Beach has the widest area of sand.

π There is not much of a beach directly in front of the Outrigger Reef resort (right) and Waikiki Shore (left), but right nearby is a small area of sand where you can set up.
Note that there are several Outrigger hotels in Waikiki, so make sure you know which specific hotel you’re looking at! The Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach (Fort DeRussy) and Outrigger Waikiki Beach are 2 different hotels.

π If you’re staying at the Outrigger Reef end, walk the Fort DeRussy boardwalk for 5 minutes and you will be at the Hilton end of the beach with lots of space.

π This is the Rainbow Tower of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, as seen while walking the Duke Kahanamoku lagoon boardwalk. Keep walking, and in a couple of minutes, you will end up on the Fort DeRussy boardwalk and Fort DeRussy Beach.

Hotels near Waikiki Beach Walk and Fort DeRussy Beach
Fort DeRussy Beach is near an open-air food and shopping area called the Waikiki Beach Walk which also hosts Hawaiian cultural activities.
Note that Waikiki Beach Walk is not actually on the beach.
And then from the Waikiki Beach Walk, it’s a few minutes to walk to the Royal Hawaiian Center and International Market Place, which are good landmarks for central Waikiki, aka one of the busiest parts of Waikiki.
So if you would rather not stay directly in the middle of the crowds but still want everything within easy walking distance, it can be perfect to stay in the area of Waikiki Beach Walk.
The oceanfront places to stay on the Waikiki Beach Walk end of Fort DeRussy Beach are the Halekulani Hotel, the Outrigger Reef Resort, and the Waikiki Shore by Outrigger.
There is a beach access path on Kalia Ave right next to Waikiki Shore and the Outrigger Reef, and there are several hotels that are just a few minutes by foot to this beach access. Being in this area also puts you just a few minutes to the Waikiki Beach Walk.
To get to the beach while staying at Ka La’i Waikiki Beach is basically a walk across the street and you are at the beach access. The Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk and Imperial Hawaii Resort are just off of Kalia Ave, so it’s a few minutes to get to the beach access if you are staying at one of these places.
Stay at any of these hotels to be within easy walking distance of the beach and central Waikiki without being directly in the middle of it all.

π Go for a walk around Waikiki Beach Walk at night and see the tiki torches lit up.

π When staying at a hotel around Waikiki Beach Walk, you’ll find a Fort DeRussy beach access off of Kalia Ave that will take you straight to the beach. The building seen to the left is the Waikiki Shore condo rental.

π This is the beach directly at the end of the Kalia Ave beach access path, which is also the beach that’s steps from Waikiki Shore and the Outrigger Reef resort.

π Once you’re at the end of the beach access, you can walk the paved path along the coast to the Hilton end of Fort DeRussy Beach… or stop anywhere along the way!

π In general, the Fort DeRussy Beach has calm water for swimming. Look for little rocky areas underwater, and that will be your best chance at seeing little fishies! Although Fort DeRussy Beach is not the best snorkeling in Waikiki, if this is your beach of choice, there is a chance that you’ll see some fun fishies. (I’ve been swimming from one end to the other, so I can confirm this!)

Hotels near Kalakaua Ave and Fort DeRussy Beach Park
Another area to stay around Fort DeRussy Beach is just beyond Fort DeRussy Beach Park. Right behind the beach is a spacious open area that has a walking path going through it. This path connects Kalakaua Ave to Fort DeRussy Beach in around 10 minutes.
The park is not that big, but it’s a nice walk through a green area that can also be perfect for a morning walk or a morning yoga session. You can also buy some food at a nearby ABC Store and go for a picnic in a shaded area.
This gives you a calmer feeling than central Waikiki. But again, with Waikiki not being that big, you won’t be that far central Waikiki, with a 10-15 minute walk to get to the Royal Hawaiian Center and International Market Place.
Hotels near Kalakaua Avenue that are a 10-15 minute walk to the beach through Fort DeRussy Beach Park include Luana Waikiki Hotel and Suites and Holiday Inn Express Waikiki. If you want to go for luxury, the Ritz Carlton Residences Waikiki Beach is also in this area.
Staying in this area, you’ll be 1-2 minutes from a bus stop to catch a bus towards Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, or Manoa Falls.
Even if you’re staying at a hotel closer to the beachfront boardwalk on either end of Fort DeRussy Beach, you can still easily access the park, as the boardwalk connects to it.

π Walk 10 minutes from a hotel near Kalakaua Ave through Fort DeRussy Park to get to the beach.

π Follow the paved walking path to the beach.

π You’ll end up at the Fort DeRussy boardwalk and the best part of the beach!
