Free things to do at Pearl Harbor without a tour… or tickets!

During my most recent visit to Pearl Harbor, I arrived around 2:30pm to Pearl Harbor by bus.

I got on the USS Arizona Memorial boat through standby shortly after arriving. The ferry to the USS Arizona Memorial is THE thing to do at Pearl Harbor. You can take a chance with standby tickets, but it’s best to buy your USS Arizona tickets ahead of time.

I had bought a ticket ahead of time, but I was late for my reservation time because the free Hawaiian cultural class I went to in Waikiki ran longer than I expected. (Oops…)

Luckily, the park ranger put me on standby immediately, and I was in the next group to go.

After the trip to the USS Arizona Memorial, I got an audio tour and basically spent the rest of the time walking around the visitor center grounds until closing time.

 

The Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that you want to visit is the Pearl Harbor National Memorial on the island of Oahu, managed by the National Park Service.

Going to the Pearl Harbor visitor center is free and you can show up without tickets and walk around the grounds.

The free things to do around the visitor center, like the mini-museums and commemorative circle, will help you better understand what happened around Pearl Harbor and Oahu, both before and after.

So yes, it can be worth it to go to Pearl Harbor without a tour, and even without tickets. You’ll be in the very location of an event that changed the course of world history.

Although there is one thing that you do want to plan ahead and get a ticket for that’s practically free. That’s the boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial.

Things do change with the way they do things at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, but this is based on my most recent Pearl Harbor visit in July 2025.

1. USS Arizona Memorial ($1)

While not actually free, I think you will agree that $1 to visit the USS Arizona memorial is practically free. You need a ticket to go to the USS Arizona memorial. It’s better to get this ahead of time, and you need to plan ahead for it.

 

👆 One of the biggest reasons to go to Pearl Harbor is to visit the USS Arizona Memorial.

 

👆 The boat rides to the USS Arizona Memorial are operated by the US Navy in coordination with the National Park Service.

 

 

The USS Arizona memorial is what everyone thinks of when they think of “Pearl Harbor.” So it’s something you want to try to go to. It’s the most common thing to do alongside all the free things.

It’s a boat ride to the USS Arizona, and you need tickets in one way or another, whether that’s buying tickets ahead of time or getting standby tickets when you arrive.

If you show up to Pearl Harbor without USS Arizona Memorial tickets, it’s possible that you may still end up being able to go to the USS Arizona through standby. But getting a standby ticket does not mean that you are guaranteed to get on a boat.

So the most ideal way is to secure tickets ahead of time. This has a reputation of being one of the difficult Oahu reservations to make. The main thing is, you need to be ready and quick.

You need to be online at 3pm the day before you go to Pearl Harbor so you can buy your tickets at recreation.gov. This is the official website for national park reservations. You need to have an account in order to even attempt to get tickets, so create that now if you’re going to buy your own tickets.

 

As of summer 2025, the National Park Service says:

USS Arizona Memorial

Reservations are strongly recommended.

Standby tickets are available but limited.

The first-come, first-served distribution has been discontinued.

 

Over the years, the way to get USS Arizona Memorial tickets has changed, so be sure to read up on current updates.

There have been times that there have been “walk-in tickets”… then none at all… and as of summer 2025, you can show up without tickets and try for “stand-by tickets.” In the recent past, you could also reserve tickets up to 8 weeks in advance, but as of mid-July 2025, that’s on pause. So again… check for current updates! Look for: Pearl Harbor National Memorial > basic information > entrance fees > reservations and tickets.

 

👆 You can show up to Pearl Harbor without tickets and try to go to the USS Arizona Memorial on standby, but there’s no guarantee.

Pearl Harbor tours

There are also Pearl Harbor tours that you can book, and these include transportation from Waikiki.

There are also basic tours to Pearl Harbor from Waikiki like the USS Arizona and Honolulu city tour.

 

 

2. Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater

No tickets are required to watch the documentary in the theater.

 

There’s a theater located next to the USS Arizona waiting area. In that theater, there’s a 23-minute film that gives you important historical context for where you are.

This used to be something to do as part of your USS Arizona Memorial ticket, but you can now watch the film separately.

When you first walk through the entrance of the visitor center, off to the left is the USS Arizona ticket counter. There, you will find the day’s showtimes for the theater showings.

This is a must-do when you go to the visitor center, so check for the times that the film is showing in the theater when you arrive! Then, set your phone’s alarm so you won’t miss it.

 

 

3. Mini-museums

The “Road to War museum” and “Attack museum” are free admission without any tickets needed.

 

👆 One of the best free things to do at Pearl Harbor without a tour is to visit the mini-museums.

 

 

There are 2 “museums” (exhibits) that you can walk through for free, and this will give you more context surrounding Pearl Harbor before and after.

As the name suggests, the Road to War museum will give you a better understanding of the global political climate leading up to the war.

And then the Attack museum focuses more on the actual tragedy of the Pearl Harbor attack, along with a little bit of what happened afterwards. There is also a short film (10 minutes or so) in the attack museum that you should watch.

 

For an added fee, you can get even more context while going around the museums by getting the audio tour. It gives additional information and stories surrounding Pearl Harbor. It’s called the “multimedia tour” which you can buy at the USS Arizona ticket counter. When I got the multimedia tour in summer 2025, it was narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis whose dad served in WWII.

 

There are also paid museums at Pearl Harbor, including the USS Missouri battleship (the spot where Japan officially surrendered which meant the end of WWII), Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum (flight simulator fun for kids and adults), and Bowfin submarine (the “Pearl Harbor Avenger“).

 

👆 In front of the museums, you’ll see the Tree of Life. The National Park Service says that the Tree of Life sculpture at Pearl Harbor is a relief, and a symbol of renewal created by USS Arizona Memorial architect in order to inspire contemplation.

 

Your Netflix movie to watch before you go to Pearl Harbor can be Midway, which is about the Battle of Midway that happened in the Pacific Ocean during WWII after the Pearl Harbor tragedy. I saw Midway on a map in one of the museums, and when I was looking for Pearl Harbor things on Netflix after my visit, I found this!

 

 

4. Commemorative Circle

The commemorative circle is a walking path outside with no tickets required.

 

👆 You can walk around the grounds of the Pearl Harbor visitor center for free and learn things about what happened in the waters right in front of you.

 

👆 You can read details on the informational sign about what happened in front of you and around the island of Oahu.

 

 

The waterfront walking path you’ll see when you start walking around off to the left of the information booths is the commemorative circle.

This isn’t something you need a lot of time for, but it adds depth to everything you’ve already seen. It also gives you background information on what happened on the day of the Pearl Harbor attack, and there’s also a memorial.

 

👆 You’ll want to walk the waterfront trail at Pearl Harbor so you can get greater context of what happened in the very spot you are standing.

 

 

5. Ford Island bus tour ($1)

Similarly, this is not actually free, but $1 to do the Ford Island bus tour is practically free!

 

The Ford Island bus tour is the “hidden gems of Pearl Harbor” tour. Through this pretty exclusive tour, you get to see the USS Oklahoma Memorial and the USS Utah Memorial, Pearl Harbor sites that far fewer people see.

With tours only happening 3 times a week, tickets are even more limited than USS Arizona memorial tickets.

You also buy these tickets at recreation.gov, and you can buy Ford Island bus tour tickets up to 2 weeks in advance. Book sooner rather than later!

How much time do you need for Pearl Harbor?

You should give yourself at least 3 hours to do the main free activities at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, along with the USS Arizona memorial.

So this 3 hours includes walking through the mini-museums, spending time walking the Commemorative Circle outside, watching the documentary at the Pearl Harbor Memorial Theater, and taking the $1 boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial.

Inside the Visitor Center, you’ll find two free museum galleries: Road to War and Attack. Both are filled with historical artifacts, photographs, and personal stories from the events leading up to and during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

I did all of this in the 2.5 hours I had at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, but I do think I felt a bit rushed a bit knowing that the visitor center was closing soon. I arrived to be able to get on the 2:30pm boat that was going to the USS Arizona Memorial, and I was at the visitor center pretty much until closing time at 5pm.

I think you should allow at least 3 hours, and that if you ONLY want to do the free stuff… and I include the $1 USS Arizona as part of this.

If you go to one or more of the paid Pearl Harbor museums, you can easily make it a full day at Pearl Harbor.

 

 

Fees for your Pearl Harbor visit

So it’s possible to have a worthwhile visit to Pearl Harbor for free since admission to the Pearl Harbor visitor center is free.

But there may be other Pearl Harbor fees you’ll encounter.

It’s $1 for the USS Arizona memorial and Ford Island bus tour. You want to book these in advance.

The museums you need to pay for are the USS Missouri ($40), Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum ($30), and Bowfin submarine ($26). You can just show up and buy tickets on the day-of for these museums, although the flight simulator at the aviation museum has limited tickets. You can save $2 a ticket by buying online before you go.

There are also fees for parking and baggage storage.

If you’re driving, there’s a fee for parking at the Pearl Harbor visitor center. It’s around $7. See current fees.

If you show up with a bag or backpack, you’ll need to do the baggage storage at Pearl Harbor. You’ll see how to get to it when you walk towards the visitor center entrance.

Pearl Harbor has a no-bag policy. A clear water bottle is okay. Anything you can put in your pockets is okay.
