ALOHA!

Making reservations for the Diamond Head hike is pretty straightforward, but you should know that as an out-of-state visitor, you DO need to make a reservation online before you go. Ideally at least a week in advance will probably be fine. The longer you wait, the less time slots will be available, so the sooner the better. The reservations are for a certain time frame.

It’s more urgent to make reservations if you want to drive to Diamond Head, because you also need to reserve parking in that case. Parking tickets are even more limited.

So it’s not a situation where you need to be at your computer or phone at a certain time ready to snatch up limited tickets like you do with other in-demand Oahu activities that require reservations.

But you do want to book your Diamond Head reservation in advance. You can do so up to 30 days before you want to go. You don’t want to leave it to the last minute if you’re thinking of going on a certain day. In particular, if you’re going to during busy season and you want to go “tomorrow,” chances are that tickets will be sold out.

The Diamond Head hike is at the Diamond Head State Monument.

First, the quick tips for Diamond Head and beyond!

  • Wear proper shoes! Don’t wear flip flops. Brooks running shoes can be perfect. (You don’t need to be a runner to appreciate these shoes!) They are lightweight with good grip, which is why they work well for trails like Diamond Head where you don’t need to be prepared for anything too rugged. Plus, they’re great for walking around town too.
  • Bring water! I think snacks are a good idea too. There are food trucks near the trailhead for post-hike food.
  • You can do a combo tour that includes both Diamond Head and the North Shore: Circle Island tour with Diamond Head hike
  • For your other more casual outdoor activities, teva sandals are popular travel sandals that are good for walking!

How to make Diamond Head reservations

The actual page you need to go to in order to make your Diamond Head reservation is: https://gostateparks.hawaii.gov/diamondhead

It’s possible to buy your Diamond Head tickets 30 days in advance.

On my most recent visit to Oahu, I was so caught up in getting my Hanauma Bay tickets that I totally forgot about Diamond Head.

Since I didn’t think I really needed to book far in advance I just didn’t even think about it!

But after I had booked Hanauma Bay, I suddenly thought of Diamond Head, and when I went to check for tickets for the day I was interested in (which at that point was 3 days in advance), all tickets were sold out. Then I checked the following day, and there were a very limited number of time slots available. I did end up booking on that day, but there wasn’t much choice with what time to go. (But at least there were options!)

Diamond Head tours

The Diamond Head hike is something you can easily do on your own. But if you want to do it as a part of a tour, you can do that too.

You can make it a Diamond Head + North Shore combo day by first hiking up Diamond Head, and then heading to see another iconic part of Oahu.

Or make it a hiking day by doing 2 iconic Oahu hikes through a Diamond Head + Makapuu Lighthouse Trail hiking day.

There’s also the Diamond Head shuttle that includes round trip transportation from Waikiki.
