ALOHA!

Kualoa Ranch can be worth the trip from Waikiki so you can have your interior island experience… and also be in a famous filming location!

I am not even a big movie person, but I really liked the Kualoa Ranch tour I did.

Even if you do the easy-going popular movie tour, I think it’s more than about just seeing filming locations. Any movies I had seen that were filmed at Kualoa Ranch I saw a LONG time ago, so I definitely didn’t recognize anything specific that was mentioned. But I still thought the tour was great.

Certainly, if you have seen movies that have been filmed at Kualoa Ranch, it makes it an even more fun experience! (I actually ended up watching a few things after the fact! I’ll let you know a few of them below!)

But it’s not only about seeing the as-seen-in-the-movies type thing, but it’s a scenic drive through a bit of the interior of the island. You really won’t be getting this kind of experience of going through a lush valley like Kualoa Ranch anywhere else on Oahu.

πŸ‘† There are a lot of references to movies and TV show filming locations throughout Kualoa Ranch, including Jurassic Park and Jurassic World!

πŸ‘† Any tour through Kualoa Ranch will take you through more of the interior of Oahu!

You have several different types of Kualoa Ranch tours to choose from, and you will want to book your tour in advance.

It is possible to show up without tickets and see what’s available… but there might not be much available.

I showed up without tickets and it ended up working out well for me, but that was a risk. And it really only worked out for me because I was a solo traveler. There were more tour options available for me as one person than there were for a couple (or more people). I saw a couple walking away disappointed from the ticket counter after they were told of the tour options that were left.

Kualoa Ranch is much easier to visit by car.

You can go to Kualoa Ranch without a car, but it will just involve a lot of time on the bus. You will save time by driving.

But if you’ve seen even just a few movies that have been filmed at Kualoa Ranch, then it will be worth it to be in the spot of famous filming locations.

Plus, you need to see the dramatic mountain range when you go to Oahu, so you can think of Kualoa Ranch your “mountain” day!

how to get to kualoa ranch from waikiki by bus

πŸ‘† You can get from Waikiki to Kualoa Ranch by bus. It’s a long bus ride though! There’s a bus stop right by Kualoa Ranch. This is the bus stop you’ll take on the way back. On the way there, it’s on the other side of the road.

Kualoa Ranch is around 25 miles from Waikiki, and it takes a little less than an hour to get there by car, if you don’t have much traffic. It will take just under 2 hours by bus. There is a bus stop right in front of Kualoa Ranch.

No matter how you go, you need to give yourself plenty of extra time. Even if you book your tickets in advance (which you should really do), you’ll need to check-in once you arrive. There may be a long line for this.

Now, below is a little bit more about going to Kualoa Ranch from Waikiki, by car or by bus! (Plus a few things you’ll want to watch on Netflix before you go!)

IMPORTANT!

It is a VERY good idea to buy your Kualoa Ranch tour ahead of time! It’s very possible that if you just show up, you won’t be able to do the tour you want because they are sold out.

The most popular way to see Kualoa Ranch is the movie sites tour. This takes you around on a bus for scenes you may be familiar with… and mountain views! (Okay all tours include mountain views.) Or you can make your time more adventure-filled by exploring Kualoa Ranch through an open-air jungle expedition, by UTV, or by e-bike!

How to get to Kualoa Ranch

Now, here is more about getting to Kualoa Ranch from Waikiki, by car, bus, uber, or taxi.

Driving (parking)

If you already know that you want to rent a car, then you can drive to Kualoa Ranch. There’s a parking lot at Kualoa Ranch and it’s free.

The drive from Waikiki may take around 50 minutes to an hour to get there. It’s possible it may take longer depending on traffic. (map)

Plus you may want to make at least one stop. You’ll want to take the route of the Pali Highway (map) and you can stop at the popular Pali lookout (reviews).

You’ll pass right by Yummy Huli Huli Chicken on the way to Kualoa Ranch, so you can have a classic Hawaiian plate lunch (reviews), as well as Kualoa Regional Park (reviews) for classic views of “Chinaman’s Hat” aka Mokolii.

Afterwards, if you want to make it a loop around Oahu, you can continue your drive north. If you’ll make it before 4pm, you can stop by Kahuku Farms for food (reviews). Keep driving and make stops along the North Shore, including Laniakea Beach (aka turtle beach) to see if there are turtles lying on the beach. You’ll end up driving through Haleiwa, where you’ll have lots of food options.

πŸ‘† There’s a free parking lot at Kualoa Ranch, so you can arrive without tickets.

Without any Kualoa Ranch tickets, you can go to the gift shop (including Jurassic Park souvenirs) and the cafe, but that’s not really “seeing” Kualoa Ranch. You really do want to do a tour to experience it!

If your goal is to see mountain views, then you can see that too, even before you get there.

If it’s mountain views you’re after, you’ll also want to consider going to Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden and/or to Byodo-in Temple too. With a Kualoa Ranch tour, you will go into the valley though, so it is a different experience than just seeing the mountains!

To rent a car to go to Kualoa Ranch, search for the cheapest car rentals. The best prices will generally be from Honolulu Airport.

Take a look at expedia car rentals and discovercars.

Bus

It’s possible to get to Kualoa Ranch by bus. Going by bus from Waikiki means that it will take time and patience!

I went to Kualoa Ranch by bus.

There is a bus stop in front of Kualoa Ranch, the Kualoa Regional Park, and Yummy Huli Huli Chicken. So you can decide which bus stop you want to get off at.

The huli huli chicken place is a little further away from Kualoa Ranch, about a 40 minute walk (map). It’s not the safest walk, as it’s just a shoulder you’ll be walking on, with cars zooming right by you. I took the bus between the huli huli chicken spot and Kualoa Ranch.

There’s a bus every 30 minutes or so in both directions. (Or it was when I went in July 2025 during the week!)

From Kualoa Regional Park to Kualoa Ranch is about a 10 to 15 minute walk (map). It’s a similar walking situation, not much walking space, but it’s not as long of a walk. The time you’re actually on the main road is like 5 minutes.

Getting off at the bus stop directly in front of Kualoa Ranch, you do need to cross the busy road, so just be careful. On your way back, you won’t cross the road to get to the bus stop since you’re going in the opposite direction.

Overall, expect the time in transit from Waikiki to Kualoa Ranch to take at least 1 hour 50 minutes one way.

A bus transfer may be necessary, unless you walk to Ala Moana Center to take the bus directly to Kualoa Ranch. Google maps makes it easy to navigate by bus to Kualoa! Just look for the public transit icon, pick a route you like, and do what it says!

If you are going by bus, it can be helpful to do a google maps bus route search for the way back to Waikiki. You can take screenshots of future bus timings for the way back.

Uber

There is Uber in Waikiki. It will be nearly a 1 hour ride to get to Kualoa Ranch. There have been reports of people waiting 10 to 15 minutes to get a driver.

You can check the uber app even if you’re not currently in Hawaii just to get an idea of how much it will cost. For the best estimate, try to do a search during the day Hawaii time around the time of day you want to go to Kualoa Ranch since it will be based on real-time data of available drivers! I did a random check and it showed $65. But check and see what you find!

My data wasn’t working at Kualoa Ranch, but they do have free wifi.

Taxi

The well-known taxi company called Charley’s Taxi lists their flat rate as $116 for a one-way taxi from Waikiki to Kualoa Ranch. Of course this can change.

More Kualoa Ranch tips (aka what to watch before you go!)

Your Netflix movie to watch before you go to Kualoa Ranch is Finding Ohana! It’s a fun family-friendly Hawaii-based movie that, yes, was filmed at Kualoa Ranch! (But better than just being a filming location, they actually say they are at Kualoa Ranch during the movie!)

You will also want to watch Kong: Skull Island on Netflix, because it will make that section of the Kualoa Ranch tour much more fun to see! This is a stop on the movie tour, so you actually get to walk around something you can see in the movie.

The TV show LOST is also on Netflix. In particular, there was a section at Kualoa Ranch during the tour where you can see “Hurley’s golf course.” That will be more fun if you first watch Season 1 Episode 9 called Solitary! (I actually watched Lost when it first came out but that was such a long time ago that I didn’t remember that scene. So I watched the episode again after I went to Kualoa Ranch!)

If you’re flying to Hawaii soon, look to see if there’s Jurassic World available to watch! On my flight from Hawaii in July 2025, I was able to watch it on the plane! In particular, it was fun to see the part where the kids drove a UTV across the cattle gate as they were trying to get away, because the tour guide actually mentioned that very scene during the tour as we were driving over it! (I was flying on ANA which is a Star Alliance airline, so maybe United also has it?!)

Quick travel tips when you are OFF TO WAIKIKI!

You want to book your Kualoa Ranch tickets before you go. You don’t want to show up and be told that there are no tickets! The most popular (and easy) tour is the movie sites tour.

You can go to Kualoa Ranch on your own by bus (map). It will take time, and it may require a bus transfer. The bus stop is right in front of the ranch!

It’s about a 50 minute drive by car, maybe longer with traffic (map). See cost of car rentals at expedia.

Whether you go by car or by bus, you’ll want to stop by Kualoa Regional Park for views before or after! It’s just a few minutes from Kualoa Ranch. You might also want to stop by Yummy Huli Huli Chicken for a plate lunch.
