If you’re going snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, you don’t need to bring your own gear.

There’s a small rental stand near the beach where you can rent basic equipment, and there are lockers here too.

You can only pay by credit card. When you rent, you’ll need to provide something as a “deposit,” like a drivers license, car key, or pay a refundable deposit. You’ll get this back when you return your rental.

I’ll show you what was available for rent on my most recent visit to Hanauma Bay in July 2025!

At the time I went, it was the tour company Dive Oahu that was managing the snorkeling gear rentals at Hanauma Bay.

Naturally, one of the things they are best known for is their reef diving tours!

 

Snorkeling gear rental cost

When you get to Hanauma Bay, you can rent snorkeling gear as a set, and you can also rent individual pieces. For example, you can rent just the mask and snorkel (the thing that allows you to breathe) or you can rent just the snorkeling fins.

In July 2025, it was $25 for the set (mask, snorkel, and fins). Individually, it was $15 for the mask and snorkel, $20 for prescription mask and snorkel, $5 for a new mouthpiece, and $10 for fins.

You could also rent a shorty wetsuit for $12 (for women and for men), a snorkel vest for $12, and a life jacket for $12.

There was also a “platinum package” for $45 that included the snorkeling gear set (mask, snorkel, fins), a wetsuit, and snorkel vest.

 

 

Should you rent or bring your own snorkeling gear to Hanauama Bay?

If you know that Hanauma Bay is your one and only time you’re going snorkeling in Hawaii and elsewhere, it can be easier to just rent at Hanauma Bay. It will also save on luggage space.

If you want to get in the water in other places around Oahu to look for little colorful fishies, bring your own snorkeling gear!

Save on luggage space by buying just the mask and snorkel (the fins take up the most space), or buy the snorkeling gear set with fins if space isn’t an issue.

Or you can find basic snorkeling gear at stores all over Oahu like ABC Stores (so many in Waikiki), Target, Walmart, and more.

Should you rent fins?

Hanauma Bay is big and you want to go swimming all over so you can see what you can find! So if you won’t be bringing your own fins, then I think you should rent them.

Fins will help propel you further faster using less energy, which is exactly why I rented fins for Hanauma Bay. They were scubapro fins.

I usually don’t wear fins when snorkeling in Waikiki. I wear water shoes. But I did want fins for Hanauma Bay because it’s a bigger area so I wanted to cover more area faster!

 

If you’re arriving to Hanauma Bay without water shoes, then I think you should absolutely rent fins.

Along with the main purpose of wearing fins (go further faster!), they will protect your feet. Protecting your feet is the bigger reason I think you NEED them if you don’t have water shoes.

You absolutely should wear something on your feet. You may read over and over again (and hear it when you’re actually at Hanauma Bay) that you should never stand on the reef. This is true. But that won’t stop you from accidentally hitting it. And getting scraped by coral reef can cause infections.

You can buy water shoes before you leave for Hawaii, or once again, you will find them at stores all over Oahu.

 

 

 

Beach gear rentals

You can also rent umbrellas and beach chairs at Hanauma Bay.

You can rent an umbrella and 2 beach chairs as a set for $50 for half a day or $75 for the full day.

To rent a chair only, it’s $20 for half a day and $30 all day.

To rent an umbrella only, it’s $30 for half a day and $40 for a full day.

If you’re just renting an umbrella or just a chair, then a half day is 2 hours and a full day is 4+ hours. For the set, a half day is 3 hours, and a full day is 4+ hours.

If there are high winds, they won’t rent out umbrellas.

 

 

Lockers

There are also lockers to rent at Hanauma Bay. These are not self-service lockers, as they are behind the rental counter. So you’ll hand off the items you want to store. The cost of storage is $12 for a small locker and $15 for a big locker.

 

 

Where do you rent gear?

The snorkel rental booth is located right near the beach. You will be walking down a hill or taking a tram to get down to the beach. So it’s not near the entry or admission booth. Once you get down to the beach area, if you walk towards the information booth (it’s a little sheltered area), you’ll see the snorkel rental off to the right.

 

 

Rental return

You’ll rinse off your snorkeling gear at the rental booth’s rinse station before you return your gear.

If you’re at Hanauma Bay later in the day, you’ll want to make note of the rental return time. It’s earlier than the time you need to be off the beach at the end of the day.
