ALOHA!
The Makua and Kila statue is a bronze sculpture of a surfer and seal, located in Waikiki at Kuhio Beach. It represents the deep connection to family and the ocean. It shows a boy surfing alongside a Hawaiian monk seal, based on a children’s story that symbolizes Hawaiian values.
It is a quick stop along the sidewalk of the main road of Kalakaua Avenue, right near the Waikiki Wall. Seeing the surf buddies feels like a simple heart-warming introduction to Hawaii!

👆 It’s not even a minute walk to get to the Waikiki Wall from Makua and Kila, since it’s pretty much right next to it! This is a good sunset spot too.
Stop 3: Surfer on a wave statue
👆 The surfer on a wave statue is a 2 minute walk from Makua and Kila, a straight walk on the sidewalk to get there. You can also see a banyan tree here, with Queens Beach being right there as well.
Stop 4: Queens Walkway
👆 The Queens Walkway is a 5 minute walk from the Makua and Kila statue, continuing on the paved path to get there. This is another spot that juts out into the ocean, and offers amazing views of the Waikiki skyline! If it’s time for food, Barefoot Beach Cafe is right there.
