Don the Beachcomber Treehouse at International Market Place in Waikiki Hawaii

The Don the Beachcomber treehouse at the International Market Place in Waikiki is a fun little spot to go to.

It actually is a part of a tree… or it feels like it anyway! The treehouse is at a massive banyan tree, one of the most impressive in Waikiki. By making your destination the treehouse, you can get a greater sense of how the tree is all connected and just how massive (and unique!) the banyan tree is!

When you go up to the treehouse, you will see that it says “Don the Beachcomber” and “Don’s treehouse.” The “Don” here is a guy who called himself Donn Beach, who set up a spot in the 1950s that included a treehouse at the banyan tree. This would become an area for private dinners in the treehouse and for luaus down below.

Today, the treehouse serves as a mini-museum of sorts, remembering Donn Beach’s legacy and the history of the International Marketplace. It’s also a perfect spot to go to take in the massive banyan tree!

How to get to the International Market Place treehouse

Entering the International Market Place off of Kalakaua Avenue (a main road in Waikiki), you’ll walk straight ahead and a massively sprawling tree will be right in front of you! This is the banyan tree, and you’ll also immediately see the treehouse on the second floor. You’ll first want to walk around on the ground level to get a sense of it, and you’ll also see the Don Ho statue. (This Don is unrelated to Don’s treehouse.)

Then once you’ve taken in the tree from down below, head up the nearby escalator so you can walk inside the treehouse! As you go up, you’ll get a different perspective of the banyan tree, and you can see more of how it’s connected.

Once you’ve gotten to the second floor, walk to the treehouse as you continue to be amazed at the banyan tree! Once at the treehouse, you can read up on the treehouse’s place in the history of Waikiki and the International Market Place.

After you’ve finished up at the treehouse, head to the Queen’s Court to look for the Queen Emma statue! This is also the location of the Queen’s luau and a free hula show.
